Duffy is proud to welcome Michael Olayo as Building Envelope Consultant in our New York office, where he will contribute to building envelope and facade restoration projects. His role will include conducting leak investigations, performing progress inspections, participating in site meetings, and delivering detailed technical reports.
Michael Olayo’s path into engineering started with a simple realization early on—he was drawn to math and science, and he wanted a career that would incorporate both. After initially pursuing mechanical engineering at Manhattan University, an introductory course exposing him to different engineering disciplines led him to make the switch to civil engineering, a decision that ultimately shaped his career.
While much of structural design work is computer-based, Michael found himself gravitating toward the more hands-on and visual aspects of the field. He enjoyed sketching and understanding how building systems come together in the real world, which made building envelope consulting a natural fit. An internship opportunity introduced him to Kevin Duffy, and that connection eventually led him to join Duffy Engineering Company, where the close-knit team structure offered the chance to take on meaningful responsibility early in his career.
Working in New York City, Michael is particularly drawn to the challenge of preserving historic structures. His projects often involve maintaining the original character of older buildings while ensuring they remain safe and functional. He has contributed to Façade Inspection & Safety Program (FISP) inspections at properties including Parkchester North Condominiums, an experience that stands out as a key milestone in his career. He has also developed a passion for rope access work and is a certified SPRAT Level 1 Technician, allowing him to perform inspections in hard-to-reach areas—often suspended along the sides of buildings.
What motivates Michael most is the variety his work offers. From site visits to technical reporting, each project presents new challenges and opportunities to learn. He values the ability to be out in the field and seeing projects progress in real time.
Michael approaches his work with a strong sense of ownership, believing that every project is a direct reflection of the effort behind it. That mindset, combined with his willingness to learn and take on new challenges, continues to shape his growth within the industry.
Outside of work, Michael enjoys staying active and creative. He spends his time mountain biking, training in jiu-jitsu, going to the gym, and exploring photography. He also plays guitar and enjoys drawing—interests that reflect both his technical mindset and creative side.
